You can make an effective homemade dish washing liquid using safe, natural ingredients. Here’s a simple, budget friendly recipe that’s gentle on hands and cuts through grease.
Ingredients
- 1 cup liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s – acts as the base cleanser)
- 1 tablespoon washing soda (sodium carbonate – not baking soda)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin (optional, adds moisture and thickness)
- 10–20 drops essential oil (like lemon, tea tree, or eucalyptus for fragrance and antibacterial properties)
- 1½ cups distilled water
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar (helps remove grease and add shine – but avoid too much as it can react with castile soap)
- 1 tsp xanthan gum or cornstarch (for thickening, if desired)
Instructions
- Heat water slightly (not boiling)
In a pot or bowl, warm the distilled water so it mixes easily with other ingredients. - Dissolve the washing soda
Add the washing soda to warm water and stir until completely dissolved. - Mix in the soap
Slowly add the liquid castile soap. Stir gently to avoid too much foam. - Add glycerin and essential oils
Stir in the vegetable glycerin and your chosen essential oils. - Thicken if needed
If you’d like a thicker liquid, mix 1 tsp of xanthan gum or cornstarch in a small amount of water, then add it in. - Bottle and label
Pour the finished soap into a clean, empty bottle (a recycled dish soap bottle works well). Shake before each use.
